I must admit I’m depressed.
And if you’ve been following me for a while, you know I’m from Jamaica and you know what happened two weeks ago.
Hurricane Melissa wrecked the island.
Homes gone.
Lives upended.
Communities still in the dark.
Meanwhile, I’m here trying to write about storytelling and business.
Every time I open my laptop, guilt hits.
“How can I talk about content when people can’t even cook dinner?”
For days, I stayed silent.
Then I realized silence helps no one.
Because this is the reality of being a writer, you never stop feeling.
But you can turn what you feel into something that helps others.
That’s how I keep writing about whatever I want, even in chaos.
Here’s what I learned:
It’s not about ignoring pain.
It’s about transforming it into perspective your readers need.
In this email, I’ll show you three ways to do that, so you can write about your life while still connecting to your audience’s life.
Let’s dive in.
1. Use Emotion as Entry, Not Escape
Your feelings are data.
They tell you what matters.
Instead of hiding them, start there but always ask, “What truth does this reveal?”
Pain becomes powerful when it’s processed into meaning.
2. Translate Personal Into Universal
What you feel isn’t unique, but your view is.
Bridge your story to a shared struggle: uncertainty, rebuilding, growth.
People relate when they see themselves in your reflection.
3. End With Direction, Not Drama
Don’t leave your audience in the rubble.
Show them what you learned.
Show them what’s next.
That’s how vulnerability builds trust, it offers hope, not pity.
Here are this week’s practice prompts to help you turn raw moments into real stories:
“The moment I stopped hiding my pain, I learned ___.”
“What this storm taught me about starting over is ___.”
“When everything fell apart, I realized ___.”
“I used to believe ___ until life reminded me ___.”
Write one.
Post it.
Tag me when you do.
Let’s fill the feed with stories that rebuild trust
one honest sentence at a time.
Til tomorrow,
Stephen

Over the next year, Roku predicts that 100% of the streaming audience will see ads. For growth marketers in 2026, CTV will remain an important “safe space” as AI creates widespread disruption in the search and social channels. Plus, easier access to self-serve CTV ad buying tools and targeting options will lead to a surge in locally-targeted streaming campaigns.
Read our guide to find out why growth marketers should make sure CTV is part of their 2026 media mix.
