I’ll be honest…
I’m nervous.
There’s a hurricane heading straight for Jamaica right now.
And for once, I don’t care about storytelling, algorithms, or clever lines.
I just care about keeping my family safe.
Every few hours, the path shifts.
Every new update feels worse than the last.
I’ve lived through storms before
but this one feels different.
Maybe because now I’m not watching it from a newsroom,
I’m watching it from my living room
with three little faces asking questions I don’t have answers for.
“How strong is it, Daddy?”
“Will it break the windows?”
“Can it take our house?”
And I smile.
Because that’s what dads do when they’re scared out of their minds.
The truth is, I’m doing what everyone else here is doing.
Stocking up.
Charging devices.
Filling buckets.
Pretending I’m calm while my stomach’s in knots.
It’s a strange feeling
knowing something powerful is coming
and there’s nothing you can do but wait.
You check the trees.
You watch the clouds.
You pray the wind changes direction.
So that’s where I’m at right now.
Somewhere between faith and fear.
Trying to look strong,
hoping I don’t have to be.
Till next time,
Stephen “Just holding it together” Stanberry
P.S. If you’re in Jamaica too
check your batteries, fill your tanks, call your people.
We’ll ride it out together.
