Most doctors hate their jobs. Don’t quote me on this.
Ali Abdaal was different. He loved being a doctor. But he had this crazy idea.
What if he could teach people stuff on YouTube? Just as a side thing.
That side thing now makes him over $4 million a year.
1. How it started
Ali was in his final year at Cambridge medical school in 2017.
Smart guy. Destined to be a successful doctor. But he had this business selling courses to help people get into med school.
The business was stuck at $150K revenue. Not bad, but not growing.
So Ali thought: "What if I make YouTube videos to get more students?"
He had zero experience. Zero subscribers. Zero clue what he was doing.
But he started anyway.
2. The breakthrough
Here's what's wild. Ali kept working as a full-time doctor while building YouTube.
Most people quit their jobs to "pursue their passion." Ali did the opposite.
He worked nights and weekends. Made videos about productivity, studying, life as a junior doctor.
Eighteen months later? 100,000 subscribers. And his YouTube income matched his doctor salary.
Think about that. A full-time doctor's salary. From YouTube. As a side hustle.
3. The business model
Ali figured out something most YouTubers miss. YouTube ads are just the start.
He built multiple revenue streams:
YouTube ads and channel revenue: $50K+ per month
Skillshare courses: $70K per month
Part-Time YouTuber Academy: $1.7M in 2022
Affiliate marketing, sponsorships, books
The course is where the real money is. Prices start at $1,495. One launch did $2 million revenue.
Students pay him to teach them exactly what he did. Build a YouTube business while keeping your day job.

4. The systematic approach
Ali didn't just get lucky. He built systems.
He batches his filming. Records multiple videos in one day. Outsources editing. Has a team of 10+ people now.
He treats YouTube like a business, not a hobby. Plans content months ahead. Tests what works. Doubles down on winners.
While working as a doctor, he figured out how to create content in 5-10 hours per week.
5. My take
Ali cracked the code on something most entrepreneurs get wrong.
You don't have to bet everything on your side business. You can build systematically while keeping your main income.
He went from 0 to 6 million subscribers. From doctor to entrepreneur. But he didn't do it overnight.
He did it methodically. With systems. While working full-time.
Now he's got a business that makes more in a month than most doctors make in a year.
The lesson? You don't need to quit your job to build something big. You need to build something systematic.

P.S. Ali's story proves what I see with every successful entrepreneur I study. The ones who win don't just have good ideas. They have systems that work even when they're not working. That's exactly what I help business owners build the content systems and stories that turn their expertise into predictable revenue streams. Because your knowledge is worth more than you think.
